Psoriasis is a chronic skin problem and people suffering from it only understand the problems associated with the disease. Psoriasis is typically characterized by red patches on the skin and is considered as an autoimmune disease. The patches of red, itchy and thick skin may be associated with swelling. It can occur at any part of the body but often found in elbows, knees, scalp, face, lower back and soles. The intensity of the disease ranges from mild to severe and may lead to the host of health problems like psoriatic arthritis, plaque psoriasis in some cases.

While the precise cause of the disease remains a mystery till date, it is observed as the genetic disorder and is triggered by stress or infections or allergies. The new skin cells are developed deep inside the skin, and it normally takes one month for the cell to come to the surface replacing the old dead cells which get exfoliated naturally. This process is termed as skin turnover. When psoriasis sets in, this skin turnover takes place in just a few days, and the new cells pile up on the surface and disturb the normal pattern.


Psoriasis usually affects the adults, and both men and women are equally susceptible to suffer from the disease. Since the disease appears similar to other skin diseases, the doctors diagnose it by observation or testing the skin cells under the microscope. There is no known permanent cure for the psoriasis, and different treatments are often applied for different patients by doctors. There are some home cure methods which have benefited a large number of patients suffering from psoriasis.

One of the common triggers for the psoriasis is the dryness of the skin due to weather variations. It is very important to keep your skin well hydrated so drink plenty of water daily. One should typically apply petroleum jelly or any other moisturizer to lock the moisture under the skin and help it to heal. Spending some time in outdoors every day, say 5 to 15 minutes, allows the beneficial ultraviolet B rays to mitigate psoriasis problems. Take care to avoid overdoing it and applying sunscreen lotions of SPF 25 and above on unaffected exposed areas is recommended. Soaking yourself in lukewarm water bath tub mixed with some Dead Sea salts (or Epsom salt) for 15 minutes and then applying moisturizer to retain the skin moisture is also a known remedy to provide relief from the itching.

Stress is also known to be one of the potent triggers to aggravate psoriasis. Try meditation and yoga to keep you free from stress. Creams with capsaicin (chemical found in chili peppers) have also been found to relieve the redness and inflammation. Rinsing your scalp with Apple cider vinegar is found helpful in people scalp psoriasis. Herbs like turmeric in your daily diet or the Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil, fish, fruits and veggies have also been known to reduce the severity of psoriasis related symptoms.
