Intelligent Tanning – How To Get Bronzed Without Burning
Summer’s here, and now it’s time to hit the beach and work on that tan. A healthy glow is an integral part of natural skin care. The trouble is, lots of people will overdo it on the first day, and end up bright red rather than healthily glowing. However, it is possible to get a suntan without burning.
Before you head outdoors, make sure your whole body is moisturised and hydrated, so that you tan evenly and your skin doesn’t dry out in the sun. Use a body lotion, cream or body oil suited to your skin type and age, such as Naturally Mediterranean Magic Hair Oil and Body Silk.
Never, ever go out in the sun without sunscreen, even once you have a golden tan. Sunscreen will not stop you getting a tan. It will, however, protect against sunburn so you tan safely. Go for at least Factor 15 protection – higher if you live in a hot country, or if you’re vacationing in one. Use a higher protection factor for the face, since it’s the one part of your body you can’t cover up when you’ve overdosed on sun.
Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you go out, and make sure you’re fully covered. A coloured sunscreen, which turns clear after a few minutes, is ideal for this purpose. Or simply slide your hands inside the edges of your clothing, to be sure all areas are covered.
One application will not get you through the day. It’s a good idea to reapply sunscreen every two hours, and also after swimming. Avoid the extreme heat of the day, between noon and 3.00pm. That’s when to go for a long leisurely lunch in the shade, or take a siesta.
When you come indoors from the sun, shower and apply after sun lotion. Go for a spray containing aloe vera, as it cools the skin and calms down any slight redness. If, despite everything, you do get some red patches, spray with after sun again before bed, or apply Magic Hair Oil and Body Silk to the sore bits, as it helps to heal sunburn. Drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated.
If there’s any redness at all the following day, keep the affected area covered when you’re outdoors. People get burned because they ignore the visible evidence and expose reddened skin to the sun, instead of covering up for a day to allow it to cool.
Spend a little time in the sun on the first day, then gradually increase it over a few days, rather than hitting the beach full time on day one. That is sure to lead to sunburn, even if with a high factor sunscreen. Skin needs time to adapt to the strength of the sun, especially after a long cold winter. With a little care, anyone can achieve a healthy suntan, without the sunburn.
